The Fifth Season of Folly: Carnival & Balls in Munich 2026

In Munich, the “fifth season” officially begins on November 11. However, Carnival reaches its most atmospheric peak now, when the city immerses itself in a colorful celebration of joy with balls, parades, and long-standing traditions.

This time turns the entire city into a stage for imaginative costumes, music, dance, and living tradition. From family-friendly afternoon balls to glamorous gala evenings, Munich offers unforgettable experiences for every taste.

A very special highlight of carnival season is Munich's Schaeffler dance. It was first documented in 1702 in the city archives of Munich and is one of the oldest surviving traditions of the city. The Schaeffler dance is performed only every seven years and takes place from January 6 (Epiphany) until Shrove Tuesday. During this time, the dancers move through Munich's streets and squares.

This tradition is also preserved in the surrounding region, for example by the Schäfflerzunft Kirchheim e. V. and the Bauerntheater Ismaning.
