Off into the cool water!
Are you looking for the perfect place to relax and cool off on a hot summer's day in Munich? The city offers a variety of outdoor pools with nostalgic charm and family-friendly facilities. Discover some of the best outdoor pools in Munich that offer both history and plenty of swimming fun.
Maria Einsiedel natural pool: swimming in the countryside
The Maria Einsiedel natural swimming pool boasts an idyllic location on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by extensive parks and meadows along the Isar. The water is fresh and free of chemical additives, giving you the feeling of swimming in a lake. An additional attraction is the Isar Canal, which flows through the baths for almost 400 meters. The Hellabrunn Zoo opposite provides a special atmosphere with its animal sounds.
Prinzregentenbad
The Prinzregentenbad in Bogenhausen has a sandy beach in the middle of the city with sun loungers, beach volleyball and a beach bar. The 25-meter sports pool invites you to cool off, while those who don't want to swim can float in the current channel or use the massage jets and neck showers.
Schyrenbad: nostalgia and history
The Schyrenbad in Giesing is the oldest outdoor pool in Munich. In 1968, it served as the backdrop for the movie "Zur Sache Schätzchen". During the 1972 Olympic Games, it was used as a training facility. The pool was founded in 1847, but was reserved exclusively for men until 1938. It was the first Munich outdoor pool to open its doors at the end of April. Swimming under the old treetops is described by regular guests as true bliss. The pool is just a few minutes' walk from the cycle and walking paths along the Isar and is adjacent to the municipal rose garden.
Michaelibad & Westbad: fun for the whole family
All of Munich's pools are family-friendly, but the Michaelibad and the Westbad offer a particularly large number of attractions for children. Current channels, slides, diving platforms and water mushrooms provide variety and fun. Both pools have spacious outdoor and indoor areas so that bathing fun is possible whatever the weather. Bathing fun for young and old!
Swimming in the Isar and surrounding lakes
Munich's waterways offer a refreshing cool-down in summer and numerous opportunities for water fun. Especially along the Isar between the Reichenbach Bridge and the Flaucher, there are popular spots for sunbathing and swimming. In addition, the picturesque lakes such as Langwieder See, the versatile Riemer See and the idyllic Dreiseenplatte with the Feldmochinger, Lerchenauer and Fasaneriesee invite you to linger. The Eisbach in the English Garden offers a unique experience, where you can float on hot days and then take the streetcar back to your bathing towel in comfort.
Please note that in the English Garden you may only enter the water in the permitted areas. It is twice as much fun there, otherwise there is a risk of injury.

Tips for a successful gourmet experience in Munich's beer gardens
Different countries, different customs - even in the beer garden. If you want to get to know the Bavarian way of life, you should adapt to the local customs. We have therefore put together a few tips to help you get started in the world of Munich's beer gardens.
- Please move closer together and enjoy the conviviality. In Munich beer gardens, mingling and getting to know other guests is part of the experience. Introduce yourself by your first name, clink glasses and feel at home.
- Please do not ask for a fish knife. The traditional Steckerlfisch is eaten with your fingers or a small wooden skewer. Cutlery is not required, just like with Obatzden, which can and should be enjoyed together with a pretzel.
- It's better not to order a "Bier", but a "Helles". In Munich, bottom-fermented lager is particularly popular and is served in most beer gardens by one of the city's six major breweries: Hofbräu, Augustiner, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr and Spaten.
- Be careful with "rounds for everyone". In Munich beer gardens, beer is traditionally served in liter mugs, the Maßkrüge. Due to the weight of more than two kilos per filled mug, you should not consume more than three mugs in a row if you are not experienced. Ordering a round for the whole table could be too much of a challenge.
- Pay attention to the closing time. Even if the night is still pleasant and lively, the bell in Munich beer gardens announces the end of serving at 10.30 pm. By the time the lights go on and off half an hour later at the latest, it's time to say goodbye. After all, you should stop when it's at its best.
