The history of Munich

The name of our beautiful town comes from the word Munichen, which can be traced back to monks. There was a dispute between Bishop Otto of Freising and Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, which was settled before the Emperor and the Imperial Diet in Augsburg. The dispute was mainly about customs duties on the bridges over the Isar, which were burned and rebuilt during the dispute. From 1180 to 1918, Munich was ruled by dukes, electors and kings of the House of Wittelsbach.

Since then, Munich has been the capital of the Free State of Bavaria.
